Contemporary Walled Garden Design
This contemporary garden design encompasses the drive and the small walled back garden. The granite paving at the back is laid at 45 degrees to the house to create the illusion of space. A mixture of reclaimed granite cobbles and modern granite blocks are laid in an inviting dynamic curve on the drive. Cedar screens have been created at the back with a circular cut out that echoes the circular detail in the house wall. Great care was taken to proportion the scheme to allow space for a garden table and chairs. The horizontal lines of the screens are contrasted with strong vertical planting. The box hedge adds a degree of formality whereas the informal loose planting scheme softens the whole space. The blue and yellow planting scheme has been jazzed up with flashes of purple and orange. The viburnum tinus half standard is a strong focal point that is used in both the back and on the drive to frame the door. The bespoke cedar storage box doubles up as a simple seat making the most of the space. A small tree adds height and grounds the scheme. At night the lighting creates wonderful shadows and extends the use of the garden. The drive combines modern and traditional materials to create a strong sense of place that drives the design forward. The recessed lighting is a practical and stylish addition. The planting is simple but effective and helps to soften the whole space.
